 Creador de cientos de películas experimentales únicas, considerado una figura destacada del cine experimental americano.  El objetivo Brakhage en sus películas era liberar el acto de ver de las limitaciones de la representación y la expectativa. Utilizó una variedad de métodos, la creación de películas que van en longitud de unos pocos segundos hasta varias horas y mostraron visiones que van desde los producidos por la fotografía a los realizados por pegar objetos para el celuloide y el rascado y la pintura del celuloide. También enseñó en la Escuela de cine del Art Institute de Chicago (1969-81) y en la Universidad de Colorado en Boulder (1981-2002). Su mejor película más conocida, Dog Star Man (1964), es considerada una obra clave de la vanguardia americana.
